Disability Support (NDIS)

“At the end of the week, I know I’ve helped someone achieve their goals.”

Disability Support (NDIS)

First off – some background to the current state of play in Australian Disability Care.

If you weren’t already aware, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has revolutionised life for people with a disability. Launched in mid-2016, the program is focused on helping the individual live the life they want. That will mean something different to each person – it could mean getting a job, pursuing a dreamed-of passion or becoming more independent.

The NDIS will provide about 460,000 Australians under the age of 65 with a permanent and significant disability with the supports they need to live an ordinary and rewarding life.

What differentiates the NDIS from prior programs is that the insurance scheme takes a lifetime view. It is underpinned by a commitment to early investment to improve later outcomes.

The NDIS helps people with a disability to:

  • Access mainstream services and supports, such as Health and Education
  • Access community services and supports – e.g. sports clubs, community groups, libraries or charities
  • Maintain informal support arrangements with family and friends
  • Receive reasonable and necessary funded supports

Given that the NDIS will pay for supports that are reasonable and necessary for an individual’s goals, the demand for Support Workers has exponentially increased.
